lockout

With the NFL lockout in effect the season looks to be in doubts for this year. The players union decertified on Friday when an agreement could not be accepted on both sides. With the lockout in full effect the players are not allowed into the training facilities or to even see their coaches. The Players Association has made many propsals to solve the questions that the oweners have raised. The owners never did justify there demands for the worst deal in pro sports. The only thing that will take place is the draft in late April. There is now some questions that are being raised about wether the top draft picks will even show up to the draft. The league is looking to expand the season to 18 games. This would mean more money for the owners but the risk for injury to the players also increases. The players see this and dont want to extend the season by 2 games. The league had two years to make a deal and they couldnt so only time will tell if they get a deal done in time.

  1. Thyis is an interesting topic to write on. For this paper it is supposed to be an argumentative paper. One thing that would make this topic better is that you need to make it more into a argument and not just an research project. Another thing that I would find out is: are there academic articles out there for this topic?

  2. I thought there was some concern over how to divide up the profit as well. Something like 9 billion dollars is supposed to be divided equally between teams and the NFLPA--but the owners want a re-distribution of the funds. I'm also curios how much of this relates to the current anti-Union political climate in the US. Look for a recent article by Bill Maher on how the NFL operates like a socialist economy.

  3. From what I understand there was 9 billion dollars to be divided among the owners and the NFLPA, (as if any of these people needed more money) and the main disagreements have been the extended season and the issue of this money that the owners put aside. Definitely you need to address that the NFLPA like all other unions today have certainly overused their power. Anyone can agree that they should lockout if the NFL refused to buy helmets for its players, or if they allowed linebackers to come storming in at quarterbacks with clubs, but the issue of some extra money they desperately need? You should definitely look into what all players are saying about this and if they truly care about it or if the NFLPA is misrepresenting its clients.

  4. I'm a bit confused by this statement: "Definitely you need to address that the NFLPA like all other unions today have certainly overused their power. Anyone can agree that they should lockout if the NFL refused to buy helmets for its players, or if they allowed linebackers to come storming in at quarterbacks with clubs, but the issue of some extra money they desperately need?" Why do the owners need the extra money more than the players? Why does getting a fare shake for all players (including the guy that's an un-drafted free agent who plays one game in pre-season blows out his knee and can never play again)mean the union has over-stepped its bounds, it is doing exactly what it was created to do. Also, the owners are the one's locking out, not the union.
